Australians All Let Us Rejoice

Aussie Flag

“The most scared I’d ever been was the first time I sang at a rugby match, Australia versus New Zealand, in front of one hundred thousand people. I had a panic attack the night before because people have been booed off and never worked again… just singing one song, the national anthem.”Hugh Jackman

I’m a proud Aussie. I love my country, I love the flag that represents it and I really love the song that describes us as a nation and a people. I love “Advance Australia Fair”. But we just don’t seem to sing it enough. I’m not exactly sure how the school system in Australia works now and that’s something I’ll find out soon by asking my daughter, but when I was a kid, in Primary School back in the late 70’s and early 80’s, we sand the National Anthem at every assembly and every major event at school. (Sports carnivals, presentations etc). Now as I said, I’m not sure if they still do that and if they do, that’s great, if they don’t, well someone needs to look at that ASAP.

Crows Anthem 2Last night I went to the 2013 AFL season opener between Adelaide and Essendon. (Check out my awesome panoramic shot HERE) Before the game started, the players and umpires all lined up, the crowd stood and the National Anthem was played. The crowd sang with gusto and it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It was awesome! I was already fired up for the start of the footy season, but this really got me pumped.

But this got me thinking. Why do we reserve our National Anthem solely for the opening game of the season and for Finals Football? Why aren’t we getting off our feet and belting out this awesome song before every game? The Yanks seem to do it all the time and it really shows how much they love their country and how proud they are to be a part of it.

I know people will say, “Do we really need to be like America?” But this is different. This is about National Pride and I gotta say, I’m all for it. Stand up, be proud of who you are, who we are and how awesome this big, brown land is!

I’d love to know what you think, should the National Anthem be played before all AFL games? Let me know in the poll below and leave your comments below or on the Classic Westley Facebook Page.
